The origins of Manual Woodworkers & Weavers can be traced back further than its establishment in 1932 by Thomas Lemuel Oates. The entrepreneurial spirit of Oates lies at the root of the company's history. He and his brother used to farm the mountain areas of Bat Cave in western North Carolina, and they would also assist their mother in finding materials for her crafts. The sons began creating wooden whistles, buckets, and birdhouses, which they would sell alongside her crafts to the people from Charlotte passing through in their horse-drawn buggies on their way to the mountains.
Later, Thomas Oates found employment at the Ashville Postcard Company. When the Great Depression hit, he lost his job, but this setback inspired him to start his own business, selling crafts like cornhusk dolls and woven pieces produced by the local women. Leveraging his experience in the wholesale business from his time at Ashville, Oates built a waterwheel to generate electricity at a mill, began manufacturing products, and opened a shop.
Over the years, Oates continued to expand the company. His son, Lemuel Oates, who would later manage the business, recalls working in the family enterprise from a young age. Lemuel explains that the products were made from cotton scraps leftover from sock production, with half-inch circles looped together to form a variety of items.
Lemuel Oates went on to attend college and then settled in Richmond. In December 1973, he returned to Bat Cave and took over the company. In 2007, Lemuel's son Travis and daughter, Molly Oates Sherrill, assumed leadership of the business.
Today, Manual Woodworkers & Weavers offers a range of high-quality products, including a stunning cotton woven tapestry throw with fringe. Generously sized at 50 x 60 inches, this throw can be used to cover a bed, drape over a couch, or adorn a comfortable chair. The tapestry features a stirring forest scene with a quote from Psalms: "As the deer pants for streams of water, so my soul pants for you, O God." Created by American wildlife artist Linda Pickens, this throw is made in the USA. Customers are encouraged to search the Manual Woodworkers collection for matching pillows and other complementary home decor items.
